What does it mean to organize a conference with the Beauvoir society?
Promotion of the conference: The conference will be promoted on the mailing list and social media accounts of the Society. Help from the Steering Committee: For each annual conference, there will also be a Conference Coordinator, chosen from among the Steering Committee, who together with the President will work with the local conference team and will oversee such matters as the call and selection of papers to be given, and other matters that may arise.
Who pays? The Society cannot offer financial support for the conference, so the organizer must obtain the funds from other sources, such as their university, their research project and the conference fees paid by the participants. The Society can provide some travel grants for participants, however. The possibility of granting support depends on the amount of money available in the fund at a given time.
Membership of speakers: As a rule, only members can present. In other words, the speakers must pay their membership fee to the Society (by PayPal) before the conference. Participants who do not present do not need to pay the membership fee.
General Assembly and Editorial Luncheon / Cocktails: The General Assembly of the Society and Editorial Luncheon / Cocktails of Simone de Beauvoir Studies are usually held in the context of the conference.
When is the conference usually organized? June seems to be the ideal time for organizing the conference, but you can suggest other times, too. The crucial thing is to publish the call for papers early enough.
In person or online? We find the informal interaction made possible by in-person conferences invaluable, but we do also consider proposals for online conferences.
