Beauvoir & Marxism
Research Group

About the Research group

This research group aims at exploring the multiple intersections of the work of Simone de Beauvoir and Marxist thought. We aim to tackle questions of intellectual influence, historical situatedness, constructive dialogue and critical dispute, mutual conceptual information, philosophical (in)compatibility, convergence and complementarity, and more...

We meet once a month online to discuss topics determined by the participants. A variety of formats are possible: reading group style discussions, open discussions of a given topic, presentation of one's work, discussion of possible common future projects...

We aim to create a safer space for the sharing of knowledge and ideas and to foster an open discussion, avoiding hierarchies (of knowledge, status, institutional ones, etc.) as much as possible.

Title of the presentation
Beauvoir's Theory of Phenomenological Sacrifice

Abstract
I will present an excerpt from a larger paper entitled "Beauvoir's Theory of Phenomenological Sacrifice" in which I argue that Beauvoir’s Ethics of Ambiguity offers an account of a phenomenological and political form of sacrifice that occurs in modern political-ethical decision making. I reconstruct Beauvoir’s theory of sacrifice in order to identify modern and rational sacrifice as a critical though under-examined aspect of Beauvoir’s political thought, and to reposition Beauvoir’s relationship to Hegelian social and political philosophy. I will first identify Hegel and Beauvoir's shared conception of the antinomies of modern consciousness, and subsequently analyze Beauvoir's presentation of the way that this antinomic consciousness plays out in the minds of ethical actors during modern political struggles. I am hoping to learn a bit more from the Beauvoir and Marxism group what Beauvoir's interaction with Marxism looked like, as I see Beauvoir's implicit uptake of Marxist conceptions of social transformation as a missing link in this paper.
